ERMI testing and interpretation specialists
Environmental Relative Moldiness Index (ERMI) testing is a DNA-based method that estimates the amount and type of mold in a home:
How it works;
ERMI testing collects dust samples and analyzes the DNA of mold spores in the samples. The results are compared to a database of known mold levels to determine if the mold levels in the home exceed average levels.
When it’s used;
ERMI testing is commonly used in homes with a history of mold issues, residences in areas with elevated mold levels, or properties that have experienced flooding.
How it done;
The original ERMI method involved vacuuming roughly 2 square meters of carpet in the living room and master bedroom for five minutes each. However, since many homes do not have carpet, a very accurate M-Trap air collection method was introduced.
Results;
ERMI values are represented on a scale from -10 to 20. For instance, an ERMI score of 14 indicates that the home ranks in the top 25% of homes for relative mold burden.
Accuracy;
ERMI tests can achieve up to 99.9% accuracy when the dust sample is adequate. Nevertheless, tests conducted after a mold removal company has attempted to eliminate mold may not yield as accurate results.
